Custom vs. Generic
Generic earplugs will protect your ears from loud sounds but are they comfortable? Do they allow you to still hear the sounds you want to hear? If you were able to answer yes to both of those questions, you wouldn’t be here looking at this website. Generic earplugs are just that, generic. Custom earmolds can be made in many colors and designs or made to just blend in and not be noticed. They are made from an impression of your ear and are designed to be comfortable so they can be worn for long periods of time. They can also be made with special filters designed for your needs. Such as, for a musician or music lover, it is imperative that the music sound natural. Generic earplugs reduce mostly the high frequencies, which means many of the instruments and voices will sound muffled. The musician’s earplugs have a filter designed just for listening to music. It allows for the music to be heard by reducing the sounds flat across the spectrum. This allows the music to sound natural. If you are a hunter, the hunter’s plugs are designed so that you can still hear the animals rustling around in the grass but the moment the gun goes off, the special diaphragm filter kicks in and reduces the volume (decibel level) by as much as 40 decibels. A single shotgun blast can be as much as 150 decibels and is instantaneously damaging to your hearing, although a noticeable, permanent hearing loss may not show up for 10-20 years or more. Protecting your hearing is incredibly important. Custom hearing protection is one option available. Please remember to always use some form of hearing protection when listening to loud sounds.
